Bonfire Night in a pub: event ideas that don't need a fireworks display

Bonfire Night 2026 is a Thursday. Here's how a pub can make the most of it, with or without fireworks: the timings, food, a themed quiz, the screens, and the fireworks rules to check first.

Bonfire Night 2026 falls on Thursday 5 November. That matters. Most big council and club displays will be on the Saturday either side, and the Thursday itself will be busy with families in gardens and on fields from about 6pm.

Most pubs can't run a fireworks display, and most shouldn't try. But you don't need one to have a good night. People go out to watch fireworks somewhere else, get cold, and want somewhere warm to go afterwards. Your job is to be that place, and to give them a reason to come to you rather than straight home. Our 2027 events calendar has Bonfire Night and every other date worth planning around.

Work out which night is your night

Before you plan anything, find out what's happening near you.

  • Check the local displays. Look up the council, school, rugby club and cricket club displays near you. Note the date, start time and finish time of each.
  • Count the walk. If a big display is ten minutes' walk away, your busy hour is straight after it finishes. Plan staff and food around that, not around 5 November itself.
  • Pick one night and say it clearly. "After the fireworks, come to us" works if you name the display and the time. Vague posts about "Bonfire Night celebrations" don't.

If there's nothing nearby, the Thursday itself can still work. People who've done sparklers in the garden with the kids often want a pint after bedtime.

Ideas that work without fireworks

The after-display warm-up

The simplest one. Open the doors, put the heating on and have something hot ready for the moment the display ends. Hot chocolate for the kids, mulled cider or a hot toddy for the adults, and a hot food offer that's quick to serve: hot dogs, burgers, a bowl of chilli, jacket potatoes. Keep the menu short so the kitchen can cope with everyone arriving in the same 20 minutes.

A Bonfire Night quiz

Thursday is a quiz-friendly night. A themed round about the Gunpowder Plot is easy to write and people enjoy it. We've written 20 Bonfire Night quiz questions with answers you can use, with sources for every answer.

Food that fits the night

Bonfire toffee, parkin, toffee apples, soup in a mug. You don't need to change your whole menu. One special and one pudding is enough to post a photo of.

A family hour

If your licence and your pub suit it, an early-evening slot for families works on a school night. Keep it short, finish early, and make it clear when it ends. Check your premises licence conditions on children first. GOV.UK says whether under-16s can come in with an adult "can depend on the specific conditions of the premises".

Garden fire pits and heaters

If you've got a garden, a couple of patio heaters or fire pits make it feel like Bonfire Night without the risk of a bonfire. Think about where smoke goes, keep them away from anything that burns, and have someone keep an eye on them.

Thinking about fireworks? Read this first

If you do want fireworks, the law sets hard limits. GOV.UK says you must not set off fireworks between 11pm and 7am, except on certain nights. On Bonfire Night, "the cut off is midnight".

The Health and Safety Executive's guidance for organisers says to check the site is "suitable and large enough for your display", with space for fireworks to land "well away from spectators". It also says to "check in daylight for overhead power lines and other obstructions" and to decide in advance who will call the emergency services if something goes wrong.

Some things to think about honestly:

  • Is your garden really big enough, with the right distances, and away from roads, houses and car parks?
  • Has your insurer agreed to it in writing?
  • Do you know what your premises licence says about events, numbers and the outside area?
  • Would a professional display company be safer and simpler?

For most pubs the answer is to leave fireworks to the big displays and be the place people go afterwards. This isn't legal advice. Check with your local licensing team and your insurer before you plan anything with fireworks or a bonfire.

Tell people early, then tell them again

Bonfire Night is close, so start now.

  1. Post the plan this week. Name the nearest display and say "warm up with us afterwards", with the food offer and the time the kitchen closes.
  2. Put it on your screens every day until then. A short slide with the date, the offer and the time is enough.
  3. Put a card on every table and a board outside.
  4. Brief your staff. Everyone should know the plan, the offer and when the rush is likely.
  5. Post again on the day with a photo of the hot food or the drinks being made.

On the night

  • Have extra staff on for the hour after the display finishes. That's when you'll get the rush.
  • Keep the door clear and the coat area tidy. People will come in cold, wet and in big coats.
  • Put the heating on early. A cold pub sends people home.
  • Watch the kids near any heaters or fire pits.
  • Put the quiz winners and photos on your socials the next morning. People like seeing their name.

How StockTap TV helps

At our place in Washington, the TVs already carry our own offers on a timed loop. For Bonfire Night that means a countdown to the night, the hot food offer from 5pm and the quiz plug, all scheduled from a phone. Countdowns are live at Teal Farm and coming to founding pubs. Our Quick Fire phone quiz runs every 20 minutes during the day, so there's something to do while people warm up. See the offers and countdowns, or join the founding pubs.

Frequently asked questions

What time do fireworks have to stop on Bonfire Night?

GOV.UK says fireworks must not be set off between 11pm and 7am, but on Bonfire Night the cut-off is midnight. Local rules and your licence conditions may be stricter, so check with your council.

Can a pub hold its own fireworks display?

It can be done, but it's a big job. You need a big enough site, a plan for safety and emergencies, and the agreement of your insurer. The HSE says only professional operators can use category 4 fireworks. Most pubs are better off working with a nearby display instead.

What's a good Bonfire Night offer for a pub?

Something hot, quick to serve and easy to understand. A hot drink and a hot food special, served from the time the nearest display ends, is easy to run and easy to advertise.

Is Bonfire Night a good night for a quiz?

In 2026 it's a Thursday, which is a normal quiz night for lots of pubs. A themed round fits the night well. Keep the start time after the local display finishes.
